Dilute colours in dachshunds are called blue or isabella. Blue is the dilution of the colour black and isabella is the dilution of the colour chocolate.

Dilution is reflected in the colour of the dog when two recessive genes come together. The dame AND the sire will need to carry the recessive dilute gene for any of the puppies to be born blue or isabella.

Dilute dachshunds are just like any other dachshund but with interesting and striking colours.

They can an additional health concern to consider. It’s important to know about Colour Dilution Alopecia (CDA). While it is rare, it can happen.

CDA is an inherited genetic condition that causes thinning or hair loss. There is currently no DNA testing available for CDA. We do research on our genetic lines and try to ensure that we are breeding from CDA-free lineage, this is to minimise the risk of CDA in our dilute puppies.

CDA is treatable and it is best to work with your vet as soon as symptoms are noticed. It usually shows up at around two or three years of age.

The blue and isabella colours are beautiful. They come from American lines and have been imported into Australia. The dilute dachshunds are very uncommon in Australia and we are super proud to have them on occassion.

Through genetic testing and careful selection of puppy parents, we are able to determine what colours and confirmation is predicted in our litters. We plan our dilute, piebald, cream and standard colour litters. We take a lot of pride in the creation and care of our puppies.
